Pioneer Encuentro – Salt Lake City
Pioneer Encuentro (Milonguero) is the private, invitation-only, gender (dance-role) balanced, milonguero-style annual event at the Clubhouse on South Temple, the magnificent, restored, historic home of the Ladies’ Literary Club where Argentine tango was danced in Salt Lake City more than a hundred years ago.
The first event, PE2018, jointly hosted by Mark and Lorraine Christensen and Jonathan Yamauchi and Olivia Levitt, was on August 10-12, 2018.

The second event, PE2019, organized by Mark and Lorraine and the Pioneer Encuentro Steering Committee, was March 29-31, 2019.

Regrettably, the Encuentros for 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to the extension of the COVID19 pandemic. Mark continued to chair the Pioneer Encuentro Steering Committee and the Encuentro again was hosted in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025, after which he turned more responsibility over to Claudia Goulston and William Howell, other members of the Committee. The event is highly popular and registration typically closes when venue capacity is filled months in advance of the event.
More information about Pioneer Encuentro can be found on the event’s website. See also some of the images from past events.
