Intermediate Tango
The goal of the intermediate tango class is to help students become comfortable dancing Argentine tango with a variety of partners in a social setting–to help them develop the confidence needed to enjoy dancing not only at local practicas and milongas, but at tango events wherever they go.
Social tango is improvisational and experiential: it involves the constant exchange of kinesthetic information–information that includes understanding balance and movement in not only for oneself but for one’s partner as well. While technique and balance can be improved with practice, dancing socially is a goal that cannot be attained by solo practice or the memorization of choreographed figures. Good technique is important but social tango skill can only be gained by experience with partners on the dance floor. Choreography or the execution of dance “figures” is secondary.
With good technique, most social tango elements feel quite natural. After a while, experienced dancers begin to discover and improvise their own variants of figures, patterns, and sequences, and their dance becomes increasingly unique and personal.
Figures taught in the class support development of technique, partner connection, musicality, and social dance responsibility. These are skills that enable students to share their dance and musical interpretation with a partner. Developing these skills is also the best way to create a healthy tango community where students can continue to improve outside of class.
MARK IS TRAVELING A LOT THESE DAYS. THIS CLASS CURRENTLY IS SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
